Viola walteri ‘Silver Gem’ has trailing stems of heart-shaped silver leaves that form dense low mats. It is jeweled with dainty violet blooms from spring to fall. Viola ‘Silver Gem’ is evergreen and makes a nice spreading ground cover that is not aggressive.
Viola walteri also known as Prostrate Blue Violet is native from Texas eastward to Florida and north to Virginia and Ohio. It is typically found in deciduous woodlands, usually in moist areas, often with Mayapple and Trillium. It is common in the Appalachians.
Viola walteri ‘Silver Gem’ prefers partial shade and moist, organic-rich soil. It is exceptionally drought tolerant once established.
