Asarum canadense, our native Wild Ginger, has velvety green heart-shaped leaves (3”-6”) on very thick stems that appear in March, followed in April by maroon, tendrilled cup-like flowers that are hidden by the foliage.
A deciduous perennial, Asraum canadense, which is native to most of eastern North America, spreads by underground rhizomes and may form large colonies, where happy.
Asarum canadense prefers woodland sites with moist, sandy, humus-rich, well-drained soil.
