Amsonia tabernaemontana ‘Storm Cloud’ is a new classic with near-black stems emerging in spring with silver-veined, very dark green leaves. Its stems remain dark throughout spring. Also known as Blue Star, it has loads of pale blue, star-shaped flowers for weeks in late spring. ‘Storm Cloud’ has a nice, mounding, shrub-like habit that stays upright into fall. Plants will eventually get wider than tall, so plan its space accordingly.
‘Storm Cloud’ is a cultivar of Amsonia tabernaemontana, a native from the East Coast to Texas. This perennial is typically found in rich, open woods, along stream banks and in moist meadows and prairies.
Amsonia tabernaemontana ‘Storm Cloud’ prefers full sun to part shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. It will grow in poor, average or fertile soil. Plants are heat and humidity tolerant. It may be cut back to within 6″-8′ of the ground after flowering to increase density and to keep compact. ‘Storm Cloud’ is a Proven Winner selection.
